External CB Speaker Installation

A CB radio is one of the most useful tools you can have off road. But if you can’t hear it then it’s not nearly as helpful! That was the problem in my Xterra.

I installed the Midland 1001LWX in the center armrest area of my 2012 Nissan Xterra. It fits perfectly, it’s out of the way, and easy to access when I need to. The only issue is that the speaker in the bottom of the unit is muffled by being in a small enclosed space with a lid over it.

After a few years of using it like that I decided to add an external CB speaker. I chose the RoadPro RPSP-15 because it was a slightly higher power output than other models I was looking at. These speakers are specially designed to work with CB radios and their mildly eccentric 8 ohm impedance rather than the more common 4 ohm that you’ll find on most car speakers. In addition to that they offer plug and play installation with most CB radios that have a jack for an external speaker.

This upgrade was super simple.

First I found a nice solid mounting point under the dash on the drivers side to mount the speaker to. I simply ziptied it to that location with a few zipties to hold it in place. If you’re concerned that’s not enough trust me, I’ve banged my Xterra off many off road obstacles since and it’s just as secure.

Next you run the wire to the radio. In my case that meant popping out several center console pieces of plastic which pop off without tools. Then I ran the wire to the radio cubby.

Finally I pulled my radio out (it’s velcroed into place) and simply plugged the speaker cable into the back!
