Paint Can Storage Rack v2

Of course before I made my first spray paint can rack I did a quick assessment of how many cans I had to make sure the size I was making seemed about right… but somehow when I went to fill my new rack new paint cans started coming out of the wood work! I had cans on shelves I didn’t know about. I had cans in my wife’s art studio… So immediately I realized I’d made a mistake and would need a bigger storage rack.

I decided that if I was going to make a bigger one I’d also try to make it a little easier to assemble. While the first one was simple to make the parts it was a little hard to get the slats to stay at the right angle and location during assembly. So I decided to make that step easier by routing grooves in the side pieces to locate and orient the shelves during assembly. Additionally, I re-assessed just how much wall space I had in my garage for this and made it as big as I realistically could in that space.

For the routing, as you’ll see in the pictures below, I did make a simple jig to help me get nice clean cuts just the right size. After measuring and marking where each groove would go I simply moved the side piece until the markings lined up with my jig and then I clamped it down and routed away. This worked very well!

The overall result is a new rack with a capacity for 60 cans, or nearly double the capacity of the original.
