Since I’ve been dabbling in woodworking recently (check out my wine rack projects here and here) and just making improvements in my garage I’ve been generating some wood scrap. I needed a way to efficiently organize and store my scrap in my very limited space. I also wanted to make sure the various sizes were easily retrieved without moving a bunch of other pieces off of the one I want.
Pinterest proved to be a great source for inspiration! A storage rack by Tom Furus sparked particular interest, so I decided to make one that was similar. While my design is my own I clearly was inspired by his approach so I wanted to make sure to give him credit.
For the most part this was made from a single 4×8 sheet of ¾ inch thick plywood. I bought a Grade B sheet, the nicest stuff Home Depot had. It was only $10 more than a piece that was not nearly as perty like. I say mostly made from a single sheet because I did make the base from some 1/2in plywood I already had which I cut to size and glued together to make a very solid 1in thick piece.
This was a great project to use my new pocket hole jig as well as my new brad nail gun from Harbor Freight. I pretty much glued every joint (except the front cross pieces which are just brad nailed in place). The additional metal fasteners were to hold everything while the glue dried but to add additional strength as well.
